The Mayor of Newry and Mourne is calling on local police to set up a taskforce after the robbery of an elderly man in Camlough.
Councillor John Feehan described the attack as one of the most "vicious the area has known in recent times".
The 69-year-old victim woke in his Quarter Road home to find a gang of men in his home at about quarter to midnight on Tuesday.
They kicked, punched and beat him with a baseball bat and during the break-in stole two guns.
Mr Feehan says more needs to be done to tackle this kind of crime.
